About New Science
New Science is a game about curiosity. You begin with a handful of the simplest things imaginable and you combine them to make something new. That something new can then be combined with other things, and as you keep going you work your way through the story of human invention. It is a simple loop, but it has a surprisingly strong pull, because every successful combination makes you want to try one more.
The listing gives clear examples of how it works. Bread and a knife can make sliced bread. Sport and competition can lead to the Olympics. The game does not tell you the recipes in advance, so you experiment, guess and learn from what happens. Some combinations will be obvious, and others will feel like a small surprise when they succeed. That discovery feeling is the main reward.
The scale is large. The game promises more than fifty thousand objects to find, arranged across sixteen ages of history. These start in the Stone Age and move through the Bronze Age, Iron Age, Classical Age, Age of Faith, Age of Empires, Renaissance, Age of Discovery, Industrial Age, Electrical Age, Modern Age, Atomic Age, Space Age, Digital Age, Smartphone Age and finally the Age of Intelligence. Each age brings new possibilities, so the game develops as you go and does not stay at the same level of difficulty.
There is also a shared element. New Science is connected to one world of discoveries, and while many combinations are already known, the developers suggest that you might find something that no other player has found. Whether or not you actually achieve that, the idea gives the game a communal feeling. You are exploring something that other people are exploring as well.
Games like this suit a specific kind of mood. They are relaxed, they have no timer and you can put them down at any moment. They also suit people who enjoy trivia, history and word association, because a good grasp of how things relate often leads to the right combination. Younger players could learn from it too, since it quietly introduces objects and ideas from many periods.
It is worth noting what it is not. There is no combat, no race and no story with characters. If you want action or strategy, you will probably find the pace too slow. If you like discovery games where the satisfaction comes from figuring things out, it is a strong candidate.
