mSnake: Retro Snake Arcade

Almost everyone has played Snake at some point, and mSnake is aimed at people who remember the original and want it done properly on a modern phone. The core of the game is the same: a snake moves on a grid, eats food, grows longer and must avoid the walls and its own body. The difference is in the care taken with the details, and in the extra modes added around the classic.

The classic mode is described as pure, with grid-based movement and responsive controls instead of floaty physics. That matters more than it sounds, because Snake depends on precision. A turn that happens a fraction of a second late can end a run, so the controls need to be dependable. The speed also rises as you go through the levels, which means that the longer you survive the more your reflexes are tested. You can play this mode anywhere, including offline.

Food types add some variety. Standard food gives ten points, bonus food gives one hundred, and shrink food, which appears from level sixteen, removes five tail segments to free up space. That shrink food is an interesting design choice, since it gives you a way out of a crowded board and rewards players who can plan around it.

There is also a puzzle mode that works very differently from the classic game. Several snakes are trapped on a board, and you tap them in the right order so they can slither off without colliding. There is a countdown, you have a limited number of lives, and each stage can earn up to three stars. A path ruler and hints are available when the grid gets tight. It is a nice change of pace for players who like logic more than reflexes.

The arenas have their own music and visual themes, including Matrix, Cyber City, Magma, Deep Abyss, Chrono, Nebula and Black Hole. These give the game some atmosphere without changing the rules.

For competition, there are real-time one-versus-one online matches and a global leaderboard through Google Play Games. Daily challenges come with streaks and achievements, which gives a reason to return each day. As with any online mode, you will need a network connection for the duels.

mSnake is a good fit for players who enjoy simple arcade games, nostalgia and short sessions. The puzzle mode makes it a bit more interesting for people who find classic Snake too repetitive. It is probably not for those who want long stories or complex progression.
